PACKAGING

Taking action on packaging

Coca‑Cola offers beverages in a variety of packaging options – glass and plastic bottles, aluminium cans and refillable packaging. Each of these can play a role in helping reduce packaging waste and emissions. We are focusing efforts to use more recycled content and supporting collection rates, both of which require enabling policies and the growth of collection infrastructure.

Our goals - from design to collection

Designed to be recycled

We aim to use 35 to 40% recycled material in our primary packaging (plastic, glass, aluminum) globally, this includes increasing our recycled plastic use from 30% to 35% by 2035 worldwide.

In Australia, all our soft drink and water bottles under 1 litre are made from 100% recycled plastic (excluding caps and labels)

Partner to collect

Coca‑Cola globally aims to help ensure the collection of 70% to 75% of the equivalent number of bottles and cans introduced into the market annually by 2035.

How to recycle in Australia

Used and empty cans and bottles aren’t done when you are. You can help prevent them becoming waste by recycling them through your local Container Deposit scheme, so every bottle and can have another life

Refresh. Recycle. Repeat.

In 2019, we transitioned our single-serve bottles to 100% rPET (the term used for recycled PET) in Australia.

This means that all of our soft drink and water bottles under 1 litre are made with 100% recycled plastic (excluding caps and labels).

Coca‑Cola and Planet Ark team up to help Aussies recycle more and recycle better

Most Australians love recycling and do a good job – if there’s access to the right information.

That's why Coca‑Cola has teamed up with Planet Ark on National Recycling Week since 2019 to help Aussies understand how to recycle and to raise awareness of Container Deposit Schemes (CDS).

Our partnerships making a difference

Eco Barge Clean Seas – cleaning the Great Barrier Reef

Coca‑Cola Australia has been partnering with Eco Barge Clean Seas since 2018 to help clean up over 23,000kg* of marine debris from the Great Barrier Reef. We’ve also helped ensure that much of the material dredged from the ocean does not end up in landfill.

*amount of marine litter collected between January 2018 and November 2022.

Tackling marine litter together with partners

Protecting the world's oceans from debris is a significant responsibility we can't tackle alone. That's why in Australia, New Zealand, and globally we partner with experts, nonprofits, our industry and governments to support innovation and actions that help curb the flow of plastic waste.

Australia’s recycling system accepts a wide range of materials, but the best way to help your bottle become another bottle is to recycle it through your Australia’s recycling program Container Deposit Scheme. Visit your local council’s website to find your nearest Container Deposit Scheme Return Point.

In April 2025 the CSIRO (Australia’s National Science Agency) put out research showing  container deposit legislation, which enables people to take eligible beverage containers to a collection point for a refund, has reduced the number of beverage containers in the coastal environment by 40%.
