Water Stewardship at Coca‑Cola Ballina, Ireland
Responsible Water Management for a More Sustainable Future
Water is essential to our business, our communities and the natural environment. At Coca‑Cola’s global operations in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland - a concentrate facility supporting markets worldwide - we are focused on managing this shared resource responsibly. We are improving how efficiently we use water within our operations, protecting water quality and working with others to support the long-term resilience of local water resources.
Our approach combines continuous improvement at our site and around us in the local environment, reflecting The Coca‑Cola Company’s broader commitment to water stewardship around the world.
Supporting Coca‑Cola’s Global Water Ambitions
Across the Coca‑Cola system, we aim to return more than 100% of the water used in finished products globally, on an aggregate basis, to nature and communities. We are also working to return 100% of the total water used in each of the more than 200 high-risk locations across the Coca‑Cola system by 2035. At our facility in Ballina, Co Mayo, Ireland, this global ambition translates into practical action at site level: improving water use efficiency, strengthening wastewater management and continually looking for opportunities to reduce our environmental impact.
Applying the Alliance for Water Stewardship Standard
A key part of our approach is the implementation of the internationally recognised Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Standard. Coca‑Cola Ballina is working towards gaining accreditation. The standard covers:
- Good water governance: supporting transparent and collaborative management of shared water resources.
- Sustainable water balance: using water efficiently and supporting the long-term availability of local water resources.
- Good water quality: responsibly managing wastewater and continually improving water-quality performance.
- Important water-related areas: helping protect ecosystems and environments that depend on healthy water resources.
- Safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH): recognising the importance of access to safe water and sanitation.
Applying this framework helps us look beyond water use within our own operations and consider the wider water environment in which our site operates.
Working Beyond Our Site
Effective water stewardship depends on collaboration. Coca‑Cola Ballina engages extensively with employees, local communities, public bodies and water-management organisations, including Uisce Éireann (Irish Water) and local authorities.
We also support community initiatives that contribute to the protection and enhancement of local water resources and water-related environments.
Looking Ahead
Water stewardship is a continuous journey. Through investment, innovation, international standards and partnership, Coca‑Cola Ballina will continue to improve water efficiency, protect water quality and contribute to resilient water resources for the communities and environments around us.
