About ALUS
ALUS is a national charity that partners with farmers to create new acres of nature on farmland across Canada. Working with local communities, ALUS develops projects such as wetlands, grasslands, and tree plantings that restore biodiversity and help address climate change.
Today, ALUS supports more than 2,100 farmers across 41 communities who are managing over 57,000 acres of nature-based projects. These initiatives improve water quality, capture carbon, provide habitat for wildlife, and build stronger, more resilient communities—one acre at a time.
ALUS has focused on demonstrating how valuable farmers and rural communities are in achieving water replenishment, restoration, and community engagement on water issues. Farmers participating in ALUS manage 10,570 acres of wetland ecosystems in Canada that deliver ecosystem services – such as clean water – to downstream communities.
In Partnership with Coca‑Cola
Canada holds about 20% of the world's freshwater reserves, with nearly 9% of its land area covered by freshwater including over two million lakes and countless rivers. Wetlands are areas of land that are seasonally or permanently covered by shallow water or areas where the water table is close enough to the soil surface that wetland plants grow there. In Canada, there are five main types of wetlands: fresh and saltwater marshes, swamps, bogs, fens and shallow open water. Wetlands are home to over 600 species of plants and animals in Canada and are some of the most productive ecosystems on earth.
The contribution from The Coca‑Cola Company provides support to Canadian farmers that protect local watersheds through a partnership with ALUS. Together with ALUS, Coca‑Cola supports community-based efforts in ALUS Rocky View (Alberta), ALUS Peel (Ontario), ALUS Outaouais (Quebec), and ALUS Laurentides (Quebec) to deliver water-focused nature-based solutions in these regions. This funding is critical to helping farmers and ranchers carry out projects to improve watershed health, supporting Canadian water systems from Alberta to Quebec.
