Watch Voices of the Klang

“Voices of the Klang" is a documentary-style short film spotlighting the partnership between Coca‑Cola, The Ocean Cleanup, Selangor Maritime Gateway, and partners to combat plastic pollution in Malaysia’s Klang River. At the heart of this effort is The Interceptor™, an innovative system, including a solar-powered vessel that removes waste from the River Klang before it reaches the ocean. The collected waste is then sent to a newly built sorting facility where it can be sorted and given a second life. Through the voices of locals, each uniquely connected to the river and working together to shape a better future, the film highlights how this collaboration is helping to restore ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and improve the lives of communities along its banks.

About The River Klang

The Klang River runs through Kuala Lumpur. According to The Ocean Cleanup research, the Klang River is one of the 50 most polluting rivers worldwide.

To date, The Ocean Cleanup’s Interceptors 002 and 005 have collectively removed nearly 3,000 tonnes of waste from the Klang River as it flows through Kuala Lumpur’s industrial zones.

The Ocean Cleanup has currently deployed two Interceptors in Malaysia on the Klang River

Together with the local government, Interceptor 002 was a welcome addition to existing cleanup efforts, including barriers that help stop the plastic flow to the ocean. In 2020 Interceptor 002 was introduced to further improve the cleanup efficiency, making for quicker and more scalable cleanup efforts.

Interceptor 005 is the second Interceptor deployed in the Klang River. This project was largely enabled by successful relationships and networks built around the deployment of Interceptor 002 in 2020.

How to recycle our bottles

Empty plastic bottles aren’t done when you are. We can help prevent them becoming waste by recycling and helping our packages have another life.

Frequently Asked Questions

We care about the impact of every drink we sell. Working together with The Ocean Cleanup in Southeast Asia, the partnership is about supporting technology that trials innovative solutions to help prevent plastic waste flowing from rivers into the world’s oceans. We want to address the entire lifecycle of our packaging – from how it’s designed, to how it’s collected, recycled, and reused.

Intercepting pollution in rivers is crucial to help avoid  pollution from entering the oceans, which primarily comes from these waterways annually. This proactive approach  is vital for preventing further damage to marine ecosystems, which provide significant economic and environmental benefits.

The interceptor also works to monitor and understand the flow of plastic waste in the river. Coca‑Cola is also working to tackle ‘upstream’ solutions such as helping drive broader actions around infrastructure and policies that can support collection and recycling.

We don’t want to see our bottles and packages end up where they don't belong including oceans and rivers. In addition to marine cleanups, Coca‑Cola is continuing to work to help collect our bottles and cans so they can be recycled or reused. Collective action is needed to support packaging collection infrastructure and policies, that are commonly linked to plastic pollution. We have partnered with The Ocean Cleanup across Southeast Asia for four years. Our teams support The Ocean Cleanup locally – including Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand to drive awareness of the Ocean Cleanup mission with media and stakeholder events and supporting broader industry connections.
