Sprite Goes Green, Switches to Clear Bottles

Iconic Green Bottles Replaced to Boost Recycling Initiatives and Value

06/21/2020

Singapore, 22 June 2020 – Coca‑Cola Singapore, today, announced its latest green initiative – switching Sprite from its iconic green bottle to a clear PET bottle, to boost recycling of Sprite bottles in Singapore. The clear Sprite bottles, which are already 100% recyclable, will also be made with 10% recycled PET (otherwise known as rPET). These changes are part of Coca‑Cola Singapore’s efforts to deliver on its World Without Waste commitments, to help collect and recycle a bottle or can for every one its sells by 2030.

The new clear Sprite bottles are available in stores nation-wide in the following packages: 500ml and 1.5L.

“Sprite has been synonymous with a green bottle since it was launched in 1961. However, with clear PET plastic, our Sprite bottles have a higher chance of becoming another bottle again and again, creating a circular solution for plastic, and that’s why we have made this change. We want to spark a change in consumers to join us in creating a more circular economy in Singapore. As a beverage manufacturer, we recognize that packaging waste is a major, urgent issue and it is our responsibility to help prevent plastic bottles and cans, which are 100% recyclable, from going to landfill or worse, making their way into the environment,” said Barry O’ Connell, Chief Executive Officer of the Coca‑Cola Bottling Investments Group for Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei.

A study by GA Circular, a circular economy action and advisory company focused on driving the circular economy in Asia, has found that while coloured PET bottles can be recycled, a change from colored PET to transparent PET will significantly increase the value of the plastic in the after-use market and therefore its ability to remain in a circular economy and be used again and again for different purposes.

The switch to the transparent Sprite PET bottles in Singapore follows a similar move in Western Europe and then in Asia, including in countries such as the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, and Fiji.
